| rubra. Small trees 3-5 m tall, lvs. to 6-7 dm wide, trunks to 4 dm in diam. at base; bark grey, |
| older bark with broad, shallow fissures, not peeling; new twigs thick, pith solid, stinging |
| hairs on low mounds at first, these forming small, stimulose tipped thorns that persist onto |
| the trunk, the stinging hair proper only lasting 3-4 years; latex white, very sticky; female |
| flowers greenishh-white externally, slender-cylindric in bud, lobes white, spreading, flowers |
| readily falling when touched; male flowers with connate perianth, lobes separating further |
| after anthesis, fading to brown before falling. Fruits rostrate when immature. Plants |
| common in disturbed sites, less abundant and scattered in more closed vegetation; |
| seedlings not present, young plants 1-2 years old abundant. |
