Snake Range, Humboldt National Forest, on a wind swept rocky (quartzite) ridge top above

Johnson Lake on the west side of Pyramid Peak, south of Wheeler Peak , associated with

Poa. Abundant.. Perennial, forming low depressed cespitose mats; leaves glandular under

the tomentose; scape erect, Glandular or glabrous; involucre membraneous, glandular, and

tomentose, 5-6 lobed, capitate; perianth glabrous or glandular, white with a red midrib,

varying through pink to red to a deep dark red; calyx segments unequal, the innermost

series narrower than the outer. A member of the Section Capitata Torr. & Gray of the

Subgenus Oregonium S. Wats. Related to E. kingii and E. ochrocephalum.
