Collections Strengths: Poaceae (grasses)

Due to the research of Beecher Crampton (the late curator of the herbarium and author of Grasses in California), Patrick Kennedy (Professor of Agronomy in the early 20th century), Robert Tosfrud (agronomy technician in the 1950s), and Alan Beetle (herbarium curator in the 1940s), we have more than 40,000 specimens of well-curated Poaceae from all regions of the world (with an emphasis on California). Within this collection are vouchers documenting early plantings of nonnative forage grasses that were later widely introduced in California rangelands and vouchers documenting hybridization studies carried out by G. L. Stebbins and others.
