ANNOTATED CATALOGUE OF VASCULAR PLANTS IN THE COLD CREEK BASIN

The G.L. Stebbins Cold Canyon Reserve, University of California - Davis

The following checklist includes all vascular plants known to be growing without cultivation in the Cold Creek basin of Solano County, California .  For the purposes of the present study, the Cold Creek basin includes the entire Cold Creek drainage, G.L. Stebbins Reserve, Wildhorse Canyon and Blue Ridge .  This 1999 list was prepared by Kate Mawdsley, with substantial assistance from Dr. Ellen Dean, Director of the UC Davis Herbarium, and Dr. Fred Hrusa, Senior Taxonomist at the California Dept. of Food and Agriculture, who prepared the dichotomous keys.  The present list took as its first source the list compiled for the 1985 publication, Flora and Fauna of the Stebbins Cold Canyon Reserve by John L. King.  The 1985 list was the result of the extensive fieldwork and collections of Dr. G. Ledyard Stebbins and Dr. Grady L. Webster, as well as earlier lists prepared by Bruce Pavlik and John Willoughby.  Almost all of the taxa listed are vouchered in the herbaria of the University of California , Davis (DAV) and/or California State University , Sacramento (SACT).

Plant specimens examined for the  original 1985 checklist were identified using  Munz and Keck (1959), although problematic determinations were checked against Jepson (1925), Abrams (1923-60) and other sources.  Nomenclature and suprageneric taxonomy for this1999 revision follow Hickman (1993).  Annotation includes:  scientific name and author; common name (where known); habitat as given in Hickman (1993); phenology (flowering season), and selective vouchers.  The list is arranged phylogenetically by division, class and order, but alphabetically by family, genus, and species.
